Yves Montand

October 13, 1921 – November 09, 1991

Italian-born French singer and actor Yves Montand dropped out of school at age 11 to help his family make ends meet. He spent his spare time in movie theatres watching American comedies and westerns and decided he wanted to become a performer. He worked his way up through local amateur nights and eventually landed in Paris where he met the legendary singer Édith Piaf. Under Piaf’s guidance, Montand became a popular crooner and a successful career was launched.

Good looking, talented and full of charisma, Montand made the easy jump to movies. He starred in more than 60 films both in France and the U.S. He was romantically linked to international starlets like Ingrid Bergman, Mamie Van Doren and Marilyn Monroe…with whom he co-starred in 1960’s Let’s Make Love – one of Monroe’s last screen performances.

Montand worked regularly for more than 50 years. He was the target of a paternity suit in the 1980s that continued on even after the actor’s death. In 1991, Montand wrapped filming on his final movie, IP5: L’île aux Pachydermes, walked off the set after his last take, and died of a heart attack. He was 70 years old.
