Garry Marshall

November 13, 1934 – July 19, 2016

Garry Marshall was an immensely successful producer, director and writer whose contributions to American television could hardly be missed for much of the 1970s and ’80s. After coming up as a joke writer on shows like The Joey Bishop Show, Make Room for Daddy and The Dick Van Dyke Show, Marshall created and produced a string of hits of his own, including Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, The Odd Couple and Mork and Mindy. He wrote, acted, directed and just about everything in between. His career as a feature film director found notable success, as well, with box office smashes like Pretty Woman, Overboard, Beaches and The Princess Diaries. Continue reading →

Jack Klugman

April 27, 1922 – December 24, 2012

Whether you remember him as Dr. Quincy (Quincy, M.E.), Oscar (The Odd Couple) or as Juror #5 (12 Angry Men), Jack Klugman is one of those actors that’s instantly recognizable. From stage to screen, The Twilight Zone to Gypsy, he was seemingly everywhere for more than 50 years. He is probably most widely regarded for bringing the role of Oscar Madison from the stage – where he replaced Walter Matthau – to the small screen – opposite Tony Randall – in Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple.

Tony Randall

When an actor has the fortune of landing a successful and iconic role, it’s never entirely fair when the public places said actor into the pigeonhole of that role for the rest of his/her career. Despite any other accomplishments, the actor is constantly equated to that one role and is often forced to accept the public’s unwillingness to move on in order to continue to make a livelihood. Tony Randall is one of the prime examples of spending an entire career in the shadow of an iconic role.  And that role, of course, was….the voice of the brain gremlin in Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

Walter Matthau

October 1, 1920 – July 1, 2000

Walter John Matthow (NOT Matuschanskayasky – as he would often regale) was born in New York City to Jewish immigrant parents.  He was an Academy, BAFTA and Tony Award-winning actor who was known for curmudgeonly lovable characters.  The most famous of which was, of course, Oscar Madison opposite Jack Lemmon in both the stage and film versions of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple. Matthau’s career was decorated and lengthy.  Starring in more than 60 films and more than a dozen Broadway productions, he built a resume of comedy and emotional performances that few can match.

Jack Lemmon

Confession time: I cried the day that Jack Lemmon died.

For someone who was just barely a quarter of a century old, it was like losing a celluloid grandfather. Jack was so likable on screen that I felt like I knew him.  And there were plenty of opportunities to get to know him on screen.  He starred in more than 60 films including the classics Some Like It Hot (with Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe, directed by eternal neighbor, Billy Wilder,) The Apartment (also directed by Wilder) and The Odd Couple (with perennial friend and co-star, Walter Matthau.)
